(Deposit £10 - will be collected 1st August)

- Includes: Bacon Roll, Coffee, 18 Holes, 2 Course Meal -

9:30 first tee. There will be a competition on the day and a small results and prize presentation after the meal to reward those with the best scores.

Players will be required to make their own way to the club so I suggest carsharing wherever possible is the best option.

£30 is a bargain so get your names on the sheet in the clubhouse now!

As the 2010 captain of Burstwick Country Golf I would like members to get to know me, so if anyone would like to play a round of golf with me then please put your name down on this list. I will make each game I play a fourball so will need 3 names per game, I will also mix people up. Be aware that I like to mix things up and have fun so there may be a few weird and wonderful formats!

I must stress that whilst I will try my best to get around everybody, it may be difficult to arrange times immediately once a name has been put down but I will endeavour to have a round with everyone who so requests.

Oh and there's only one rule you must abide by if I play with you, you have to tell everyone I beat you!

Rules Night - Monday 8th March 2010

We are hosting a rules night for members on Monday 8th March 2010. Come and enjoy a fun quiz and educational seminar!

Here you will be able to ask those questions which have bugged you in the past and we can clear up any problems you may have with rules. This night will NOT be a chance to point out if someone doesn’t grasp some rules, it is aimed to educate members of all experience and knowledge and everyone is welcome.

Now we want the clubhouse to be full on this night so we expect everyone who goes in the competition to try and make it! It will be a great way to learn for all of us and make sure that we are all playing to the same rules.

Put your name down on the notice board if you wish to attend.

Yes it's true! Up until recently we at Burstwick have only been able to buy and stock from manufacturers that we have accounts with, which in our case is Nike, Wilson, Masters, Srixon, & Glenmuir. Our buying group has recently sent us a letter informing us that we can now buy equipment & clothing from ANY manufacturer in their group (and put it this way, if it isn't in their group, it probably isn't a manufacturer). So if you are looking for some PING, Callaway, Titleist, TaylorMade, Powakaddy, Mizuno and much more, give us a call and we will get you a quote on that new set of irons or those new fairway woods!

Burstwick Country Golf is on The Map!

As many of our members and visitors will be aware, we are always striving to get the club recognised throughout the region to increase our reputation and status. So this year I (the Captain) am going to do my best to really push teams into as many away events as I can.

This year we will be entering players the following for the very first time in Burstwick's history:

1) The East Riding Union Matchplay Championsip
2) The East Riding Union Scratch League
3) The East Riding Union Junior League
4) The East Riding Union Team Championship @ Cottingham Parks GC
5) The East Riding Union Amateur Championship @ Allerthorpe GC
6) The East Riding Union Open Championship @ Bridlington Links GC

So far we have a full team for 4) and 6), but we want more people for the others so if you are interested in playing in some great competitions and proudly representing the club please email me at alan.key@burstwickcountrygolf.co.uk and I will do my best to get you in!

Whilst I'm on the subject I would also like to mention about other Open Competitions at clubs in the area. These events are usually cheap as chips and a great way to go and explore other courses and win a few quid along the way. If you look in the blue folder under our notice board there are many different open competitions at away clubs which anyone can enter provided they have an active CONGU handicap, so if you like the idea of going to clubs such as Kilnwick Percy, Hessle, Cottingham all for around £10-15 per round then I suggest you pick the folder up and have a look!

What Wondeful Weather for the Drive In!

Saturday 16th January was the date for the 2010 Captains' Drive In at Burstwick. We decided to do things a little different this time and the 2 captains chose to do the drive off in fancy dress for added fun! One problem - the great British weather didn't agree with us that day!

Karen Batty and myself (Alan Key) were to tee off around 8:30am, play a round of golf together followed by around 30 or 40 other competition go-ers. Then we wanted to go back into the clubhouse, announce the results of the competition and winners of 20 free drinks and nibbles, and draw the raffle.

Unfortunately because of the weather it happened like this - Drive off in the rain watched by around 25 members hiding under umbrellas, then head off playing 9 holes (we decided it was too rough to put people through 18) and by the 2nd fairway we had realised that absolutely no one had followed us... Can't say I blame them, it was freezing in that wind and rain! Anyway we valiantly battled on and proceeded to complete the 9 holes with no one else on the course, absolutely wet through to the skin and to top it off, Karen beat me! (I blame the weather, honest).

So after an hour of drying off in the clubhouse, we - and around 20 patient members who had waited for us to come in - opened the buffet and enjoyed some well earned drinks. Overall a very enjoyable day for all, although had the weather been on our side it would have been even better - maybe next year please Mrs M. Nature?

Steve Young handed the captaincy over to myself and Rita Dent followed with Karen. Karen and I are really looking forward to this year of golf and are proud to be representing our club and we will do our best to make sure the members are getting the best out of their club and captains. Here's to 2010!

Captain's Drive In - 16th January 2010

Come along and support your Captain and Lady Captain on Saturday 16th January as they drive off into the 2010 season! Alan and Karen will be teeing off at 8am with various different shots giving members the chance to win free drinks in the bar!

After the round of golf has been played there will be nibbles in the bar, a raffle with great prizes and the Captain will announce the results of the competition at around 1pm! Make sure you and your friends are attending the day to support your club and join in the celebrations!

Snow, snow, and even more snow. Great isn't it? Well for the first day or two I suppose it is rather novel and exciting that we can all go out and pull sledges, have snowball fights and build snow men proceeded by going back into the house not being able to feel our fingers.

Then after that we come back down to earth and realise that snow is stopping us doing everything we want to do; play golf, go into town or even for some people just get to work and get paid! Worse still, our days are hampered by the 1st gear drivers which proceed to do the same 3.2mph whether its 4 inches deep on the roads or whether the roads are clear but there is a speck of snow 500 yards to the right in a field. Hmm, I seem seem to be getting grumpier when writing this - maybe I'm going out of my mind because of all this white poison on the ground!

Anyway, on a lighter note, anyone fancy a round of golf?

I think I could do pretty well with a pair of mittens, some pink balls (excuse the pun!) and some extra high tees that stick through the snow! Just one thing though - the flags are white.... on a white background. I think I'll wait until it thaws.

Ladies Xmas Party

The ladies kicked off the christmas season with a short round of golf, a christmas dinner and a few games and drinks in the clubhouse. Although there were 2 or 3 designated drivers it's safe to say most of them were a bit worse for wear by the time they got home!

It started with 9 holes on the golf course for the ladies.

Followed by a lovely christmas dinner in the clubhouse after some great golf (so they told me!) on the course.

And then some drinking games afterwards!

A few shocking truths were revealed in the game "I have never..." and many drinks we sipped throughout the afternoon and evening.

A big thank you goes out to our Lady Captain Rita Dent for organising the day and bringing many drinks and presents to the event, the ladies had a wonderful day followed by a few bad heads the next morning!

The David Edwards Xmas Invitational Am-Am

A great day was had by all when participants played in an Am-Am competition hosted by David Edwards at Burstwick Country Golf.

For those unfamiliar with David himself, he is a world-wide trickshot artist, commentator and all-round entertainer to the golfing world. His shows stretch from China, Spain, Germany, USA, Ireland, UK and many more countries, he has even appeared on the BBC, Sky and The Golf Channel.

On a sunny (yet brisk) Friday morning in December David entertained the teams with a fantastic 45 minute trick shot show, including his famous "scissor hands", teeing off from a volounteer's mouth, using a 2.5m long driver and much more - amazing the crowd with his awe-inspiring skill.

The teams then went out and played the competition only to be filmed on camera all over the course by David, where he commentated on each player's characteristics as well as taking the micky of anyone who tried to show off or made blunders under the pressure!

Back in the clubhouse afterwards the players enjoyed a 2 course buffet meal whilst David played back his recordings on the TV. There were many laughs (and a few embarrassed faces) with moments of brilliance and moments of madness all caught on camera!

The winning team with a fantastic 86 points were , J. Page, R. Milner, D. Ebeltoft & T. Wilkinson of Ganstead Park who won £300 worth of prizes between them. Well done chaps!

A big thank you to all the players who participated in this wonderful event, look out in the 2010 fixtures for next year's event!

Presentation Evening - Saturday 14th November 2009

The Burstwick Country Golf Members' Presentation Evening 2009 is to be held at Platform 1 on Saturday 14th November 2009.

The evening will open with a formal three course meal being served.

After the meal has concluded the presentation of the season’s awards will begin; these include the official presentation of the monthly medals, trophies such as the David Key Trophy and September Salva, Member of the Year and the dreaded Wooden Spoon! The evening will then finish with dancing, coming to an end at 1am.

Members are permitted to bring as many guests as they wish but are reminded that places are allocated on a first come first served basis so be prompt to avoid any disappointment. The set-up of the evening is formal so dress should be suitable as in lounge suits but black tie is not necessary.

The cost of the three course meal is £18 per person with the price for a child (under 12) is £8 and will be half the size of the adults meal. Invites to the evening have been sent to each member of the club so if you wish to attend please fill out the attached reply slip and bring it to the clubhouse.

Team USA win the Burstwick Cup for 2009!

With Europe winning last year's Burstwick Cup by 3 points, this year team USA wanted revenge with a victory of their bitter rivals.

After Europe lost 3 of the first 5 matches and won only 1, the scores looked gloomy at 3.5 to 1.5 with 3 matches left to play on the Saturday. Gloating USA players soon had their laughs interrupted when the final 3 matches of the day went to the Europeans which flipped the scoreboard to an impressive 4.3 to 3.5 in Europe's favour.

On Sunday the first match out was Captain vs Captain of each team, and with Steve Young(C)/Mark Newby beating Alan Key(C)/James Bisby 4 & 3 in the first match on the previous day, Alan made it well known in the clubhouse that he intended to take no prisoners in part 2 of the competition! Alan managed to successfully beat Steve 5 & 4 to take Europeans lead to 5.5 to 3.5.

Throughout sunday as each of the 16 matches came finished the scores always stayed within a difference of 1 with Europe constantly edging into the lead. That was until the very last match with the scores level at 11.5 to 11.5 for each team. Mark Newby (pictured above) vs Stewart Taylor was the final match to come in, and as they were level after 17 holes it promised to be a tense finale at the 18th.

With the other 30 players sat at the back of the 18th green many encouraging (or not so) words were uttered to the 2 players. Mark ended up holding his nerve to par the last hole and take victory over Stewart who couldn't quite manage less than a 5. Team USA became victors for the first time and very well deserved it.

So with me (Alan) having a 100% loss record in the 2 years I have been captain in the Cup and seeing my team going from leading all the way on the final day to losing at the last hurdle, you can imagine I wasn't exactly happy to admit defeat!

So after a great weekends golf with fantastic company surrounding us, we all enjoyed a nice buffet afterwards along with a myself presenting to trophy for 2009 to Steve. Well done mate!

A big thanks to the 30 players that took part, and well done USA for winning in what was an epic battle of nerves and skill.

The Stig plays golf at Burstwick!

Top Gear's famous racing driver today visited the golf club and played a round of golf, I tried to ask him what his handicap was but unfortunately I was greeted with silence. Anyway, after I figured out what he wanted he set off playing golf on the course, I didn't realise he was such a keen player!

Unfortunately we let him hire a buggy which might not have been the best idea with his track record!

Speaking of records, he wanted to take one of our buggies around the the Top Gear test track but we had to decline as the battery wouldn't last that long! So the Stig decided to try and get a record around the course instead!

"The Stig" was provided by Hullywood Entertainment who provide glamorous entertainment with hollywood lookalikes, themed cars and promotional characters.

4-way tie at the top of Open Am-Am!

After a great day's golf at the Open Am-Am on Saturday 19th September players were astonished to find that there was a 4-way tie for the top place and prizes!

4 teams managed a staggering 88 stableford points and the prizes were decided by countback.
